Context

What is MRV?

Regrow’s core offering — its Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) program — enables agribusinesses to track and report GHG emissions at the farm field level.

Each program runs for 1.5 years, engaging dozens of Regrow and agribusiness collaborators, plus 2–5 hours of data entry from every farmer, often numbering in the dozens to hundreds per program.

In Enrollment, Regrow and agribusiness teams onboard farmers, capture 3–5 years of historical data, and review fields for eligibility. In Measurement, farmers enter current-year data. In Outcomes, Regrow’s science team models the results and delivers emissions metrics.

Challenge

Retention was critical, but our deliverable was underwhelming

our deliverable was underwhelming and a Retention Risk

With the change in administration in 2024, agribusinesses grew cautious about further sustainability investments. Regrow's revenue was stagnant, and we faced competition from MRV platforms that offered less rigorous quantification but more polished deliverables. Demonstrating value to existing customers became critical to survival.

One consistent complaint: the program deliverable was underwhelming. After 18 months of work, customers received only… a CSV file.

Regrow's business was slowing; even our largest customer had [cut their renewal by X%]. Renewals depended on showing we were worth the investment, and responsive to what customers asked for.

Approach

This was the right time to invest in a solution

Having wrapped up a huge data infrastructure overhaul, the MRV product and engineering org faced with the ever-challenging question: what do we build now?

To answer this question we looked at three variables: the market; business value; and technical complexity.

Regrow had long modeled intervention outcomes — GHGe reductions against a counterfactual — but the market was shifting toward inventory outcomes — snapshots of annual emissions. Our deliverables were outdated.

Solution

Science-backed, customer-defined

In just one month — a record speed for dashboards at Regrow — we shipped a customer-facing MRV Outcomes feature that surfaced the insights and visualizations customers valued most, ensuring that we distinguished between reporting-ready metrics, as defined by our science team, and those included for customers’ convenience.

Reused modular components

Leveraging existing dashboard components cut frontend effort, streamlined tiles, and ensured a seamless experience for customers navigating between multiple Regrow products.

Displayed metrics Previously Hidden for Inventory Programs

Displayed Previously Unavailable Metrics

Practice adoption metrics, previously unavailable for inventory programs, were now available for all customers.

Progressive Disclosure Of Technical details

Instead of burying technical MRV details in subheaders — or omitting them altogether — we introduced helpful labels, tooltips, and CTAs to external docs, making complexity accessible without cluttering the interface.

Outcomes

$1.7M in Revenue Retained

By addressing a critical pain point, we protected $1.7M in contracts from customers who might otherwise have churned.

Strengthening the Platform Play

By integrating MRV outcomes with corporate inventory tools, we delivered the seamless data flow CPG customers had come to expect. This reduces data proliferation from multiple MRV providers and positions Regrow as the one-stop shop for regenerative agriculture metrics.
